Life
"Life is rather like a tin of sardines: we're all of us looking for the key."
Alan Bennett
- What are we living for?
- Does God exist?
- Is there life after death?
- Does it matter what I believe?
- Why do so many bad things happen?
Then feel free to post your comments here.

What is the CU?
[We believe…]
That the Gospel as described in Matthew 28:18-20 is true, that we are commanded to live by it and share its truth with others.
[Our aim...]
To grow in maturity, as individuals and as a group.
To share our faith with anyone who is interested.
[What we do…]
Our meetings are relaxed and informal, we meet on a weekly basis and usually have one of the following:
- Bible study
- Guest speaker from a local Newport Church
- Time of prayer
- Social evening [bbq’s, parties, bowling, meal out, games etc…]
- Informal debates on current issues
Events should be posted up and whether you are a Christian or not anyone is welcome to join us!

Bible: John 3:16
This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.
John 3:16 (MSG)

Churches
There's absolutely tonnes of churches in Newport (it might not be the easiest site to look at, but see www.newportchurches.com for a more complete list), so you've got a fair bit of choice. It's a good idea to have a good look around to see which one you'd feel most comfortable in, but here's some of the churches that are nearest to campus.
Newport City Church
Meets on Campus in E10 Rathmell Lecture Theatre - very convenient if you live on campus! Starts at 10.30am.
Lodge Farm Evangelical Church
At the top of Lodge Road, a little bit of a climb to get to, but does you good on a Sunday morning.
St Julian's Baptist Church
Beaufort Road
About 2 miles from campus - a decent enough walking distance.
Duckpool Road Baptist Church
Further towards town, you'd probably need to bike or drive to get there from campus without tiring yourself out for the service.
7 Rockfield St,
Newport
NP19 7DG
Roughly about the same distance away (maybe not quite as far) as Duckpool Road.
If you don't want to go to church on your own, email newportcu@gmail.com and we'll arrange someone to go with.
What We Believe
We belong to an organisation called UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship), which is a network of Christian unions all around the country. They have published a "doctrinal basis" which sets out what it is we actually believe as Christians. This is what it says:
The basis of the Fellowship shall be the fundamental truths of Christianity, as revealed in Holy Scripture, including:
- There is one God in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- God is sovereign in creation, revelation, redemption and final judgement.
- The Bible, as originally given, is the inspired and infallible Word of God. It is the supreme authority in all matters of belief and behaviour.
- Since the fall, the whole of humankind is sinful and guilty, so that everyone is subject to God's wrath and condemnation.
- The Lord Jesus Christ, God's incarnate Son, is fully God; he was born of a virgin; his humanity is real and sinless; he died on the cross, was raised bodily from death and is now reigning over heaven and earth.
- Sinful human beings are redeemed from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only through the sacrificial death once and for all time of their representative and substitute, Jesus Christ, the only mediator between them and God.
- Those who believe in Christ are pardoned all their sins and accepted in God's sight only because of the righteousness of Christ credited to them; this justification is God's act of undeserved mercy, received solely by trust in him and not by their own efforts.
- The Holy Spirit alone makes the work of Christ effective to individual sinners, enabling them to turn to God from their sin and to trust in Jesus Christ.
- The Holy Spirit lives in all those he has regenerated. He makes them increasingly Christlike in character and behaviour and gives them power for their witness in the world.
- The one holy universal church is the Body of Christ, to which all true believers belong.
- The Lord Jesus Christ will return in person, to judge everyone, to execute God's just condemnation on those who have not repented and to receive the redeemed to eternal glory.

Welcome
We meet Tuesdays at 7.00pm in Room A52 in the Main Building (the back door to the big refectory) for songs, prayer, teaching from the bible and Jammie Dodgers, Hobnobs or other biscuity goodness. Everyone's welcome to come along, whether you're a Christian or not, so even if it's just for the free biscuits, feel free to join us!
For people interested in the Christian Union and what it does, go to the "About CU" section. Hopefully that'll explain things. If it doesn't, email us!
If you have any questions or comments about anything please email newportcu@gmail.com
